Check yourself in about an hour: the two-step test
Ask each assistant the questions your clients ask, without your name, and note whether you are named. Then ask about you by name and note what it gets wrong. Write down the engine, date and sources every time — otherwise you cannot compare later.
Before you start
You need a spreadsheet — or the template in the last chapter — and a browser where you are not logged in to your usual accounts, or a private window. Assistants that remember you may answer differently from how they answer a stranger.
Choose the assistants your clients are likely to use. For most European businesses that is ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode or AI Overviews. Turn web search on where the assistant allows it: that is how clients usually get recommendations.
Step one: the question without your name
Write five to ten prompts the way clients would say them — from emails, calls, reviews. Not "best accounting services Slovenia" but "I'm opening a small online shop in Maribor, which accountant should I talk to?".
Ask each prompt two or three times in each assistant, starting a new chat each time. For every answer, write down:
| Field | Why |
|---|---|
| Assistant and date | Answers change; without a date you cannot compare |
| Web search on or off | It changes what the assistant can see |
| Companies named, in order | Who is chosen instead of you |
| Sources shown | Which pages the assistant trusts in your field |
| Were you named? | Yes or no — nothing in between |
The share of answers that name you is your AI visibility for that set of questions. Keep the prompts exactly as they are: a changed wording is a new question.
Step two: the question with your name
Now ask "What can you tell me about [your company] in [your city]?" and "Would you recommend [your company] for [your service]?". Write down:
- what is correct;
- what is wrong — address, services, people, years;
- what is missing that a client would need;
- which sources the assistant used.
Wrong facts come first in the next chapter. An assistant that repeats an old address or a service you stopped offering will keep doing so until the sources change.
Reading the result
Three typical pictures:
- Not named, described correctly. The assistant knows you but does not choose you. The work is on showing which clients you are right for, and on independent confirmation.
- Not named, described wrongly or not at all. The facts about you are missing or inconsistent. Start with your own site and the main registers and directories.
- Named sometimes. Look at which questions and which sources. That is where to strengthen first.
If you would rather have the check run for you, our free check does both steps on your domain and a person reads the table before you do.
